The Balance Foundation

To Live in a World Where Triumph Outweighs Despair

At The Balance Foundation, we are movers, shakers and connectors who want to see the youth in our city given equal opportunity to participate in sport and education, regardless of the circumstances they were born into.

We want to build communities that value young people so that in return, young people can provide value to their communities. That means providing access to mentorship, improving mental and physical health, getting the opportunity to interact with like-minded peers, to develop a skill set and a purpose, but most importantly to have fun and to grow.

Mission

Create meaningful experiences and equal opportunity for at-risk youth through sport and education

  1. Empower at-risk youth’s development through sport by connecting them to caring adults who share a common passion

  2. Create & support educational opportunities for at-risk youth through scholarships

  3. Be a leader in generating awareness and creating equal opportunity for at-risk youth in disadvantaged communities

  4. Build a safer, more united Calgary

Matt Blais

12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

Powerful vocals, electrifying harmonica, and intense performances define Matt Blais. The rock’n’roll troubadour’s latest release “Fool's Gold“ (Winter 2018) is an edgy and evocative protest song for the modern era. With cutting social commentary and haunting sonics, the new track goes behind the curtain searching for authenticity in an increasingly deceptive world.

"I have always tried to find and create real moments. That can be hard to do in a world of avatars and publicists. The best way I know how is through song."

Hailing from Calgary, the charismatic Blais expands the rock genre by adding a vintage blues edge that, paired with his honest, accessible songwriting style, has resonated with his Canadian audience.

Maddison-Krebs_BW.jpg

Maddison Krebs

2:15 PM - 3:45 PM

The singer/songwriter from Southern Alberta, Canada, got her first guitar when she was six, so she could put her poetry to music. Right away, you could see her talents and drive would make her dreams come true.

“Music and art are tools to inspire and learn from one another,” Maddison explains. “Everything I do is meant to spark a greater purpose within that says, ‘you can do it.’”

In Nashville, she finds herself working with some of music’s best producers and songwriters, such as Jeff Trott (Sheryl Crow, Stevie Nicks) and Tony Martin (Tim McGraw, Keith Urban).

Copperhead_BW.jpg

Copperhead

6:45 PM - 8:15 PM

Copperhead makes folk music for the 21st century, born not in the bucolic countryside but in downtown alleyways, with punk and acid rock peering around the corners. Lurking around the deliciously dark intersection of lo-fi, post-industrial noise, R&B and minor-key murder ballad, Copperhead immerses audiences in ambient, expansive soundscapes with texture and reverb, anchored by Liz Stevens goosebump-inducing smoky contralto and gorgeously dark and dreamlike lyrical narratives.

Copperhead is Liz Stevens on lead vox and songwriting, Kirill Telichev as lead guitarist/producer, Kane Bender on drums, Rob Smeltzer on bass, and Jamey Lougheed on barry sax, with added backup vox, horns and strings as the occasion calls for it.

Natural-Ensemble_BW.jpg

Natural Ensemble

5:00 PM - 6:30 PM

Natural Ensemble is a HipHop duo that has built a status around fun times and positivity. The relaxed old school style of beats produced by B-ren and charismatic timing and flow by Geeze amalgamate to create an entertaining performance that leaves you with a smile on your face. With several Canadian tours and Calgary performances with the likes of Swollen Members, Wutang Clan, Apathy, Redman and Method Man, Dub FX, Pete Rock and C.L Smooth, Hopsin and Sonreal to name only a few, you’re guaranteed a quality show with professionalism and the audiences experience as a key focal point. Entertainment at its finest
